First day of NOVA Summer School and Camp

6/17/2014

Our summer is officially off to a GREAT start! Our Little Starts and Flowers were adorable; the Dream Catchers were whimsical; the Dragonflies were magical; the Golden Fireflies were glowing, and the Emeralds shone brightly on the first school day. This creative assemblage of students made our first day of summer school unique. Getting ready for camp is part of the fun! The NOVA campers where in for some great fun undertaking their first challenge:  rock-climbingon the not so high, but nonetheless surprisingly steep mountain Vodno. This made their first day of camp incredibly exciting, and at the same time challenging. For all those thrill seekers out there NOVA summer camp was THE place to be. Check out the photo gallery from the events here

Friday, June 6th, was a special day for our high school teachers who were being honored for their commitment, enthusiasm and hard work over the course of the academic 2013-14. A special celebration was organized in their honor, with lots of food, drinks, music, flowers and presents. The teachers were very happy to see that around 20 high school parents took this opportunity to show their appreciation by cooking food, bringing drinks, organizing music and making this party a memorable, most relaxing and fun event they have ever had. 6th grade excursion to Tetovo and its surroundings

5/30/2014

On 28 May, NOVA 6th-grade students chaperoned by their teachers Marina Spasovska, Svetlana Guguchevska and Jasmina Dzurovska-Blazeska set out on a field trip to the city of Tetovo and its neighbouring municipality of Brvenica. Our first stop on the road snaking through Tetovo to Brvenica was the Painted Mosque (Šarena Džamija), a famed 15th-century landmark whose distinctive floral wallpaintings defy tradition. We then proceeded to another Ottoman monument in Tetovo, Arabati Baba Tekke, and learned about its tempestuous history. Finally, after our applied Social Studies class was over, we sought rest and relaxation in the shades of the restaurant and bakery Bakal in Brvenica. Thanks to the hospitality of the owners, parents of our 6th-grade student Marija Simjanoska, we peeked into the restaurant's kitchen, learned how bread and other pastries are made, and enjoyed several hours of lunching, fun, and games. Check out the photo gallery from the field trip here

CEESA HS Girls Volleyball tournament in Helsinki

5/22/2014

The 2014 CEESA Volleyball Tournament took place at the International School of Helsinki in Finland. For the first time, the NOVA girls’ team was facing the challenge of defending the gold medal from last year’s tournament, and the pressure was high. On the way to the finals, they won all five matches in a round robin system of play and were impatiently waiting for who they’ll play in the big Final.  Again, for the fourth time in a row, they faced ISB from Belgrade, Serbia, and after a brilliant fight and a thrilling third set, the final score (2:1) ended in Belgrade’s favor. This is just stronger motivation for our NOVA team to practice harder and prepare for next year’s event even better. They can’t wait!     Check out the photo gallery from the tournament here

CEESA HS Boys Volleyball Tournament in Belgrade

5/21/2014

This year the CEESA HS Boys Volleyball tournament took place in Belgrade, May 16th and 17th. Due to the great volleyball interest among our HS boys, instead of only one NOVA was able to field two teams for this tournament, with a total of 15 students in attendance. After the round robin phase and the semi-final matches both NOVA teams qualified to play in the placement games, without a single defeat. In the 3rd place match our NOVA B team showed great character and after an exhausting five sets (3:2), managed to win the bronze medal by defeating the team from Pechersk School International (Kiev). In the match for the 1st place NOVA A team played versus the team of the host school, International School of Belgrade. In by far the most exciting match of the tournament, it was narrowly defeated, winning second place and securing the silver medal. Winning two trophies was a perfect ending to the spring volleyball season. Players and coaches were more than happy with their accomplishment. They're already looking forward to repeating and improving on this year's success at the next CEESA HS boys volleyball tournament to take place in May 2015. Drama class performance, a parody of the Academy Awards

5/20/2014

#DisOscars 2014 is a play the students from the Drama class created on their own. The dialogues, the characters, the costumes – it is all a product of their own creativity and ideas. The classes were used as an open space to rehearse, explore and improvise theatrical scenes. It is a parody of this year’s Academy Award ceremony. On our classes we talked about Peter Brook and Jerzi Grotowski, theater directors that contributed to the art of theater in many aspects. The first one says “Give me any empty space and I will make theater”. We decided to turn the School’s auditorium into stage where the illusion of a theater will be created. The second one, Grotowski, talks about the elements needed for a play to be created. He puts props, costumes, lights, music aside since the actors themselves on stage can create the illusion of it all. “Actors and an audience is enough”. We strongly believe you will enjoy the performance made with lots of energy, enthusiasm and devotion. An important notice: the budget gathered from the tickets sold will be donated to the victims of the floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia.

5th Grade Sutas Milk Factory Visit

4/30/2014

On April 25th, NOVA 5th grades accompanied by their teachers Mary Platz and Jasmina Dzurovska-Blazeska went on a field trip to the Sutas milk factory, to learn more about the production of milk, yogurt, cheese, ayran and other dairy products. This visit was a part of the science curriculum and the chapters on health and the human body.  It was a chance for students to learn first hand, why milk is healthy for us, how does is affect our bones, and how much milk should we drink per day.During the visit, students were able to visit the factory’s laboratory, and learn about the chemical processes required to make milk. They saw many machines and pipes, but unfortunately not any cows. Students also learned about the processes of sterilization, pasteurization, making of UHT milk with ultra high temperature procedure. The best part of the visit, was the need for all students to be properly sterilized, and outfitted with nylon bags on their feet and hair, and safety coats, to be able to visit the factory floor.  Students were up to the task, behaving responsibly and asking lots of interesting questions. Factory workers were surprised by the complexity of their questions, wondering whether students were older than they claimed. Students were able to take away not only the knowledge gained from their visit, but also some Sutas promotional materials and a lot of tasty milk. Check out the photo gallery from the visit here

Middle School Science Fair

4/11/2014

The theme of this year's Nova Middle School Science Fair was "Good Health Above Wealth." Our students developed presentations, experiments and demonstrations on healthy living. Everything from the dangers of smoking and drug and alcohol abuse to eating healthy and the benefits of exercising. The students created exhibits using the skills they have learned in all of their classes -- including dance where they demonstrated the healthy benefits of taking up Zumba. The Nova Middle School motto is "Aim High, Work Hard and Achieve Success." That is exactly what our students and teachers did at the Science Fair and every day at Nova Middle School. Middle School Book Fair Visit

4/10/2014

Nova Middle School students had the opportunity to attend the book fair in Skopje. There were books in many languages from all over the world along with a big selection of English language books. Don't forget, that if your child is returning to Nova Middle School next year, he or she will have to read at least two books this summer. Ideally one from both fiction and non fiction. Extra credit will also be given to students who read more than two books and at least one from each genre. The Book Fair at the Nova Spring Bazaar will be an excellent place to pick up more summer reading. Check out the photo gallery from the visit here

10th grade excursion to Greece

4/9/2014

On April 4th and 5th, 2014, the 10th grade students participated in an educational and cultural Spring Excursion in Greece. The two-day trip included visits to the Church of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, with the tour of early Christian subterranean catacombs, the White Tower, and the monument dedicated to Alexander the Great’s Persian Campaign. Since Northern Greece, the Province of Macedonia, is replete with the records of the Ancient Macedonian Empire, the excursion led us to the Burial Cluster of Philip II, in Vergina, featuring magnificent artwork of Classical Antiquity. The last stop on the journey was a visit to Edessa, a jewel of nature nested in a lush forest and abounding in gushing springs and waterfalls. The exhilarating combination of natural beauty and historical treasures was indeed an ennobling experience for all the participants. Check out the photo gallery from the excursion here

French Evening

4/9/2014

Yesterday, April 8th, more than 50 Francophonie lovers gathered in the NOVA High School auditorium to celebrate the French culture, language, music and cuisine. We had the honor to have the director of the French Institute as our guest, along with other representatives of the French Institute and our friends and families. This was a student initiative, and it was a great success! There was a short program of an interactive quiz, songs, drama, and poetry reading followed by food tasting. It was an enjoyable evening for everyone present, and we truly hope that it will become an annual tradition! Check out the photo gallery from the event here

10,000 Books For Our Libraries

4/2/2014

We're happy to report that the 10,000 bulk book order has arrived at NOVA. Our staff was hard at work to organize the logistics of transportation and receipt and some books have already made their way on library shelves. In the coming days and months, as our librarians process each book individually, we'll make them available for your children to read. We'll also be adding additional shelf space to be able to fit all of our new books. This project would have been impossible without the selfless dedication of each of our division principals and librarians, but there is one NOVA parent in particular who was instrumental in making it all a reality. We would like to thank Sara Predmore for all of her hard work and dedication in making each of our school libraries the centers of student learning they ought to be.
