5th Grade Sutas Milk Factory Visit

4/30/2014

On April 25th, NOVA 5th grades accompanied by their teachers Mary Platz and Jasmina Dzurovska-Blazeska went on a field trip to the Sutas milk factory, to learn more about the production of milk, yogurt, cheese, ayran and other dairy products. This visit was a part of the science curriculum and the chapters on health and the human body.  It was a chance for students to learn first hand, why milk is healthy for us, how does is affect our bones, and how much milk should we drink per day.During the visit, students were able to visit the factory’s laboratory, and learn about the chemical processes required to make milk. They saw many machines and pipes, but unfortunately not any cows. Students also learned about the processes of sterilization, pasteurization, making of UHT milk with ultra high temperature procedure. The best part of the visit, was the need for all students to be properly sterilized, and outfitted with nylon bags on their feet and hair, and safety coats, to be able to visit the factory floor.  Students were up to the task, behaving responsibly and asking lots of interesting questions. Factory workers were surprised by the complexity of their questions, wondering whether students were older than they claimed. Students were able to take away not only the knowledge gained from their visit, but also some Sutas promotional materials and a lot of tasty milk. Check out the photo gallery from the visit here

9th grade excursion to Ohrid

4/22/2014

The city of Ohrid, Macedonia was enlivened with the presence of NOVA’s 9th graders who visited the following: On Friday April 4th, 2014 the excursion started with a visit to Stobi, a Roman city from the 2nd century BC and after that our bus took off to Ohrid in the midst of laughs, singing, and cherished moments. After spending some quality time together, we visited the church of St. Sophia, the Roman-Hellenic Antique Theater, the Churches of St. Mary Perivlepta, St. Clement, and St. John. We also appreciated the Gutenberg workshop for handcrafted paper, and during the night a surprise was awaiting for a special student who was turning 15. On the second day there was a trip to St. Naum monastery where the students enjoyed the wonderful nature and the views of the shore, the lush peacocks and after that students took a joyful boat ride in the springs of Crn Drim where the guides were amusing, to continue with a visit to the Bay of Bones, to end up with free time for lunch and snacks in the center of Ohrid. Middle School Science Fair

4/11/2014

The theme of this year's Nova Middle School Science Fair was "Good Health Above Wealth." Our students developed presentations, experiments and demonstrations on healthy living. Everything from the dangers of smoking and drug and alcohol abuse to eating healthy and the benefits of exercising. The students created exhibits using the skills they have learned in all of their classes -- including dance where they demonstrated the healthy benefits of taking up Zumba. The Nova Middle School motto is "Aim High, Work Hard and Achieve Success." That is exactly what our students and teachers did at the Science Fair and every day at Nova Middle School. 10th grade excursion to Greece

4/9/2014

On April 4th and 5th, 2014, the 10th grade students participated in an educational and cultural Spring Excursion in Greece. The two-day trip included visits to the Church of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, with the tour of early Christian subterranean catacombs, the White Tower, and the monument dedicated to Alexander the Great’s Persian Campaign. Since Northern Greece, the Province of Macedonia, is replete with the records of the Ancient Macedonian Empire, the excursion led us to the Burial Cluster of Philip II, in Vergina, featuring magnificent artwork of Classical Antiquity. The last stop on the journey was a visit to Edessa, a jewel of nature nested in a lush forest and abounding in gushing springs and waterfalls. The exhilarating combination of natural beauty and historical treasures was indeed an ennobling experience for all the participants. Check out the photo gallery from the excursion here

10,000 Books For Our Libraries

4/2/2014

We're happy to report that the 10,000 bulk book order has arrived at NOVA. Our staff was hard at work to organize the logistics of transportation and receipt and some books have already made their way on library shelves. In the coming days and months, as our librarians process each book individually, we'll make them available for your children to read. We'll also be adding additional shelf space to be able to fit all of our new books. This project would have been impossible without the selfless dedication of each of our division principals and librarians, but there is one NOVA parent in particular who was instrumental in making it all a reality. We would like to thank Sara Predmore for all of her hard work and dedication in making each of our school libraries the centers of student learning they ought to be.

Elementary School Forgiveness Assembly

3/31/2014

Our students learned about Forgiveness during the month of March. They made a long Forgiveness Chain; on each link a student mentioned a difficult experience and that he/she forgives the classmate. Also, in art third graders used colors to express sad feelings, and then pulled off the stencil to reveal the word Forgiveness. It’s an important lesson to learn how to give and accept apologies and celebrate fresh starts. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

Middle School Knowledge Bowl tournament – Budapest

3/31/2014

We, the knowledge bowl coaches, would like to thank our ‘knowledge bowlers’ for their hard work and success in this year’s knowledge bowl competition in Budapest, Hungary. The students’ behavior was exemplary and, over the course of this year – during practices and on our travels - they have really developed into a great team characterized by dedication, perseverance, maturity, hard work, sportsmanship and class. We had some interesting experiences, learned a lot about one another and about a new culture, and we made some new friends. It was a pleasure for us, as coaches, to meet and spend time with the coaches from other schools, some of whom we have known and worked with now for a few years. As for a few highlights, in the airport on the way over, the boys met and took pictures with a famous football (soccer) player; and we had some good food and great camaraderie. The school in Budapest had wonderful facilities and the staff there was kind and welcoming. The games were tense, exciting and truly inspirational. We are looking forward to the time when NOVA hosts a CEESA knowledge bowl competition, so we can really show what our school is made of!The city of Budapest is incredible. We had a really nice cultural outing, taking a tour and having something of a picture-taking scavenger hunt in the castle complex on the more mountainous Pest side of the city. The students also had interesting individual and group outings with their host families. The students were very pleased with their accommodations and the host families, and the host families had fantastic things to say about the boys and their behavior. All of the students were praised for their behavior during the games, showing a superb sense of fair play and working through protests and other issues in a mutually respectful fashion. From the highly entertaining opening ceremony to the awards ceremony at the end, this year’s knowledge bowl was an amazing experience. When approached with the right motives and work ethic, knowledge bowl really brings out the best in us. Our students really put their best foot forward, in every sense. We are very proud of them and we are looking forward to next year’s competition. Check out the photo gallery from the tournament here

NOVA hosts and wins international basketball tournament

3/18/2014

The SuperNOVAs hosted a wonderfully attractive and very demanding tournament that took place in the Boris Trajkovski Sports Center. All students spent three long days competing, cheering on teams, and socializing on campus.  Our boys started their first day of competition dominating against ISB (Belgrade) and AAS (Sofia) in two exciting and exhausting games. At the end of the first day of competition, all participants were treated to a cultural tour that included a visit to the Old Bazaar, the city square and a visit to the museum of Mother Teresa. The second day brought more excitement for the SuperNOVAs. Our junior and sophomores got more playing time, resting the seniors for the more important games, and securing wins against PSI (Kiev) and ISL (Latvia). The last day, a win against ISH  (Helsinki) ensured NOVA's place in the final. The final game took place the same day against the very strong team of ISB (Belgrade). The  score fluctuated throughout the game, but at the end the SuperNOVAs emerged victorious. Our guests, coaches and students, did not refrain on sharing their satisfaction from the whole event, complimenting the organization, and especially the efforts of our Athletic Director. NOVA’s Middle School basketball teams wins silver in Belgrade

3/17/2014

This year's trip to Belgrade for the CEESA Middle School Basketball tournament was an exciting endeavor. The International School of Belgrade was tournament host and did a wonderful job in making all of us feel welcome. Our SuperNovas where scheduled to play in the POOL B game roster. We had a very successful tournament start winning our first three games in a row, against ISB's (Serbia) B team, PSI (Ukraine) and ISL(Latvia) teams. We continued the second day in same fashion by defeating the team from ISH (Finland) in the semi finals. The final game of the tournament was the highlight of the tournament, playing against hosts ISB's (Serbia) A team. Unfortunately this was the teams’s only tournament loss, finishing 2nd overall. Following the matches there was a medal and recognition ceremony, in which NOVA’s team and several players were recognized for their performance. The highlight of our trip was a chance to watch a professional FIBA basketball match, courtesy of ISB. Cheering for Red Star Belgrade was a great experience for all of us. Our students’ many months of hard work preceding the tournament, definitely paid off. Students came together as a team when it mattered most and we have the 2nd place finish to show for it.  We’re already excited for next year’s tournament. Overall NOVA played a total of 5 matches, the first against the team from Belgrade. It was a justified loss, as we were playing against the most dominant team and eventually tournament winner. However the next three games agains the teams from Sofia, Kiev and Riga, were a closely fought affair.Due to the lack of concentration and bit of luck the team didn’t end up qualifying for the final. It was important that we were able to garner just enough strength to win the last match against the second team from Belgrade. Throughout the tournament we exhibited great team spirit, playing without substitutes, even though one of our players was injured. It was the players’ own wish to endure until the very end relying on their own strength. The girls were true NOVA ambassadors exhibiting a friendly and positive attitude towards all competing teams, the tournament organizers and host families. We would like to thank our hosts for putting together an excellent event. MS girls basketball team participates in first competitive tournament in Riga, Latvia

3/12/2014

This year Ms. Simonovska and Mr. Temjanovski had the pleasure of taking the NOVA MS girls’ basketball team to Riga, Latvia. On the first day of competition, the team played their first competitive game ever against the school from Finland, winning the game. The next game was against last year’s champions, the school from our next door neighbours, Serbia. It was a difficult loss for the team, but a great learning experience. The last game of the day was against Latvia, champions from two years ago; a competitive endeavour throughout the whole game, which unfortunately did not go in our favour. The second day of the tournament brought more excitement, playing against the team from Bulgaria; by far our best game, with many lead changes, and our girls barely missing their second win. The next game was against Ukraine, but by this time injuries had gotten the better of our team, with two girls having sprains. The game was a hard-fought loss. By the time we got to our last game, against Finland again, our bench had been reduced to a single available substitution. We fought valiantly, and had the lead for the better part of the game. However as fatigue set in, we lost both our energy and ultimately the game by a three point differential. We are very happy with the girls’ development, skills and sense of fair play. What’s most important is that all girls thoroughly enjoyed their first CEESA basketball experience and are already looking forward to next year’s competition. New website

2/19/2014

Dear visitor, We’re proud to present  the fourth iteration of NOVA’s completely redesigned website, NOVA 4.0. We’ve been hard at work since the beginning of the school year, reimagining our presence in cyberspace, with the intention of capturing NOVA’s educational essence and philosophy, and reflecting it to the wider community. We would like to believe we’ve successfully achieved this by creating a website that reflects the latest breakthroughs in website development and best practices from other established international schools. Although content wise there are few changes, we've completely redesigned the way we present this content. From a flatter design (no multiple sub menus, a site map in the footer of the webpage, accessible from any page), to faster load speeds and quicker navigation through pages, our intention was to make the guest experience more user friendly. The website is completely mobile enabled, as we now receive 30% of our web traffic from smartphones and tablets.    Here are a few interesting statistics about our website to date, to illustrate its importance. A total of 123,000 visitors  have accessed the site in the last 4 years, from all corners of the world (Macedonia, United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Serbia, Canada, Turkey, Australia and Bulgaria being the top 9 countries where visitors come from ), visiting an average of 3.5 pages per visit, and spending a little less than 4 minutes on the site. This makes our site one of the most visited educational sites in the Republic of Macedonia.   A website is a continuos work in progress, therefore we welcome any remarks or troubleshooting tips.    Sincerely, NOVA Administration (info@nova.edu.mk)

Diversity project between NOVA and a Romanian school a huge success

2/19/2014

Through a project on theme "I and the others: Discovering diversity around and within me", supported by ACES, the students of NOVA International Schools, Skopje, Macedonia and Colegiul National Gheorghe Sincai, Bucharest, Romania have worked together in the previous several months to create, rehearse and perform a theatre play about diversity. After months of preparation, the students from Bucharest, Romania visited NOVA and the premiere of the play “The More the Merrier” was held in Skopje on February 8th at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts. More than 120 visitors witnessed a great performance of all involved students. The next weekend students from NOVA visited the Colegiul National Gheorghe Sincai and on February 15th together with the Romanian students performed the play in Bucharest. The project finished with this visit, but there are no doubts that the students learnt that humanity should not start and finish with projects, and that to be human means to be humane. CEESA High School MathCounts Competition 2014

2/13/2014

We had a great time in Bucharest!Despite the long time it took us to get there and return, we enjoyed the city¹s contrasts: its vivid ³old town² and its gray residential areas, its cold weather and the warm hospitality of our hosts, but most of all we enjoyed the thrill of the mathematics competition we participated in. Led by Vasil Kuzevski, our most experienced competitor for whom this was the third participation on a competition of  this kind, our senior division team swept through the ranks of the opposing teams, winning the first prize in the team part of the competition. Vasil¹s teammates Sergej Grunevski and Stefan Petrevski had no small contribution to the victory, especially considering the fact that Stefan, who is in the junior division age group, competed against older and much more experienced competitors. To further our success, Vasil ended up second in the senior division individual competition, but only after a three round tie in the head-to-head countdown round. Our junior division team members: Katerina Bujarovska, Mimi Kostoska and Armina Sinani, all of whom participated for the first time, gained invaluable experience. They are willing and able to follow in the path set by our senior team and are aware of the high hopes and expectations they have to live up to. It will be up to them to keep our current achievement level or improve it further in the following years. Whatever the outcome, our community is very proud of our students and admires their achievements. Well done guys!

CEESA Knowledge Bowl Competition 2014

2/12/2014

We are pleased to announce that NOVA's High School Team won the 4th place at the CEESA Knowledge Bowl tournament held in Vienna last weekend. The time and energy invested during the months of preparation showed that we are on a par with CEESA 's best teams. Numbers tell it best; in the elimination round on Friday, we accomplished six victories and three ties in twelve matches.  The next day, this trend continued with a winning streak stopping just short of the finals. The most impressive moment was our young team's sensational victory over Moscow's celebrated team by a big score difference, which echoed through the corridors of AIS Vienna. This prompted a huge increase in the self-esteem of all team members. That goes especially for Jana Cvetinovska, who gets a lion's share for the team's victories. Led by Martin Trpovski as captain, the team performed a string of brilliant games. Petar Peshev demonstrated that he is both a fierce competitor and an accurate problem-solver. Ilin Karagjozov's wit and acumen provided yet another contribution to our well-rounded selection. Marko Terzioski's multilingualism proved advantageous to our team. Mark Nedera's extensive knowledge helped our team succeed in multiple question categories. Filip Nikolovski gained the invaluable experience of participating in an international knowledge competition.    This success opens up a clear prospect for building up a team of experienced and self-assured players, capable of confronting any challenge in the coming years.

CEESA Middle School MathCounts Competition 2014

2/10/2014

This year's CEESA Middle School MathCounts Competition was held in Tirana, February 6-9, 2014, hosted by the American International School of Tirana, with a total of 8 international schools taking part. We’re happy to report that the "NOVA 1" team (6th through 8th grade) won the first place in the team competition! Besides our team achievement, we also had great success in the individual standings, with four NOVA students making it amongst the best eight: Emilian Cuzmici (3rd place), Siyuan Shen (4th place), Borjan Gagovski (6th place), and Sam Predmore (8th place).  The rest of NOVA’s competitors (Jovana Cvetinovska, Marko Kjalasan, Mehmed Dacic and Marku Leka) also exhibited great math knowledge and placed among the top 20 individuals with their "NOVA 2" team placing among the top seven teams. The competition was only one of the many highlights of the trip. Students were also able to visit The National History Museum, the ancient Castle of Kruja, once the headquarters of Skanderbeg. The host school had a wealth of other activities planned out for all participants, such as bowling, billiard, and other team building activities, but most importantly secured a warm host family for each of the NOVA students.  The awards ceremony was followed by a dance party.  To reach this accomplishment would have not been possible without the selfless dedication of the teams coaches, Ms. Jasmina Dzurovska-Blazeska, Ms. Natasa Kardula, Mr. Nikolche Petrovski and Ms. Irena Sazdova. From the beginning of the year through February, students and coaches met at least twice a month and dedicated much  of their free time to solving math problems.  They worked both in and outside the classroom, showing resilience and dedication to the task at hand. Their preparation came in handy, as during the competition they were able to showcase their team spirit, competitive character, friendly attitude toward other teams, and be true NOVA representatives. There is a whole year to go by, but students are already excited for next year’s competition where they hope to achieve even bigger and greater things.
