Identity- A Dutch Independent Documentary Film Project
Monday, January 23, 2012
Nova International Schools Middle School division has the unique opportunity to take part in an independent film project this month. Sixth grade students have been studying heroes and role models in their Social Studies and Language Arts classes over the past months. The question posed by Marina Spasovska to her class was, “What makes an ordinary person extraordinary in history?” Her class set out to answer that question through a series of first person interviews and research projects with local heroes, role models and inspiring people. They were visited by female police officers who trained women in Afghanistan, animal rights activists and the Dutch Ambassador.
It was that last meeting that spurred Dutch film maker, Andre Schreuders , to decide to include the voices of Nova Middle school in his new film on identity. The premise is that much of a culture’s identity is tied to whom they idolize. He is traveling around interviewing and filming middle school students to capture their beliefs about identity and role models. Students are expressing themselves through song, poetry and drama as they articulate what it means to be a hero and who their hero is.
