Learning Through Action

At NOVA, Community Engagement and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) give Secondary students structured opportunities to contribute to their immediate community beyond the classroom.

Through Community Engagement in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and CAS in the Diploma Programme (DP), students identify needs, plan and carry out initiatives, work with others, and reflect on the results of their involvement.

Community Engagement

Turning Learning Into Action

Community Engagement is part of the MYP experience, and students are expected to participate in some form of service each year of the program.

Students begin by understanding a societal issue and identifying the needs of the community involved. They then interact with people or organizations in that community and consider how their actions can contribute meaningfully.

The emphasis is on making a thoughtful impact. Students learn to consider who their actions affect, what the community actually needs, and what they can learn from working with others.

Choosing How to Get Involved

In the Diploma Programme, CAS gives students greater responsibility for choosing and managing their own experiences and projects. Every DP student participates across three strands: Creativity: Experiences involving creative thinking, which may include visual and performing arts, digital design and video production, writing, film, culinary arts, crocheting, different crafts, etc. Activity: Physical experiences that contribute to a healthy lifestyle, including individual and team sports, dance, outdoor recreation, fitness, and other forms of physical activity.

CAS activities have helped me perceive myself as a person with various abilities and expanded my knowledge of my strengths. I was able to hone my leadership, organizational, and teamwork skills. I had the opportunity to be engaged in global and local issues which have made me aware of the ethical implications of all my activities and projects. The acquired skills enhanced my worldview, and I will use them in any difficult situation.

The program has enabled me to step out of my comfort zone, and it allowed me to structure and re-evaluate my approach. I'm proud of my CAS project about getting Middle School students excited about robotics, as I was a member of the Club. I believe the lessons on structuring experiences and reflecting and adjusting one's approach are universal. I know I will use them whenever I need to commit to long-term work and planning.

Rosa, 12th Grade Student

The CAS program is a learning and growing process, during which I developed new skills such as cooking and producing keychains, and through it, I attended the Feminist Club meetings, where I learned a lot of new things. I realized that there are elements in the academic journey that are not mentally taxing and stressful but are actually an opportunity to grow your mind.
